Today was our SF Marathon Training Program’s 2nd Track Workout. Last week, in our 1st ever track workout, we did simple laps on the outer and inner tracks.I got to Kezar Stadium and sat down on the bench just in time to listen to Tom Collier, our Wednesday Track Coach, begin the briefing on today’s Track workout.
Workout Overview – Relay Race
After the introductions, Tom dove into the details of today’s workout.
He told us that after the warm up, we will run 1 lap around the inner track. He, Tom, will be waiting at the start line and as and when each one of us crosses the start/finish line, he will yell out a number. We should then remember the number and await further instructions.
Tom also said that after that initial lap, we will be doing a Relay Race. The main purpose of this exercise was so everyone could get to know their fellow trainee peeps better !
The Relay Race would be followed by the usual cool down laps for 10 minutes.
Track Log -Relay Race
After our workout briefing, I headed out to do my warm up laps around the outer track. I was able to get in 3 laps in just over 10 minutes. By this time, most of the other training peeps had completed their warm up, and as is routine, assembled at the top to do some stretching exercises.
After we finished out stretches, we headed down to the inner tracks to do the 1st lap run and get our “numbers” from Tom. I got 5. Once everyone had finished their lap and gotten their numbers, Tom told us to group according to our number. So I found other runners who had gotten the number 5, and hung out with them for further instructions.
Tom then told us what to do next. He said that we should all introduce ourselves to the peeps in our number group. After that, we should decide who wants to run 1st, who wants to run next and so on, for the relay race. Finally, the peeps who want to run 1st from each group come to the start line on the track, and after Tom gives the “Go !”, the Relay Race starts.
In my group, we had Mary, Terese, Shanna, Paul and Luis. I had met Paul and Shanna on the previous runs, but with the rest of the peeps, this was my first time ever meeting them and getting to know them.
We finished our Relay Race somewhere in the middle i.e. we were neither the 1st group to finish, nor the last !
After our Relay Race, we did our cool down laps for 10 minutes. I was once again able to get in 3 laps on the outer track. By now I felt really exhausted. On the bright side, all the running had really made my body hot, so I did not feel cold at all riding my little red scooter back home.
And of course, once again I slept like a baby (minus the diapers !)
