Today was our 2nd Monday Run at Sidney Walton Park. Attendance was quite good and I saw most of the peeps from the 1st Monday Run, as well as some new faces.
Melanie, our Monday coach briefed us in on today’s run, which was to run out for 15 minutes towards Fishermans Wharf (along the Embarcadero), and then run back to home base, for a total of 30 minutes.
She split the runners into difference pace groups, with the fastest group up front. I joined Reanna, who was on the faster side, pacing the 4 hour finish time.
Running Log – Out towards Fisherman’s Wharf for 30 minutes and Back
I ran with Reanna and two other girls who were new (to me) as I had not seen them previously.
We started our run along the Embarcadero towards Fisherman’s Wharf. Along the way, Reanna was telling us how she had run the marathon the previous year (in 2009) and shared some of her experience with her. She also told us how a lot of it was in the mind, and how we should condition ourselves through the run in order to finish within our goals. We used my Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS watch to track the time, since the others either did not have a watch, or were not getting satellite signals.
We ran until we reached Taylor Street, passing the Bistro Boudin on our right. By now, I was feeling so hungry and thirsty, I just wanted to break the window and eat one of their yummy Sour Dough Bears ! Before I could put my manifestation to action, Reanna called on everyone to start our dynamic stretches on the side-walk. We did that for about 3 minutes. Later, I would realize that I had forgotten to stop my GPS watch timer.
After our stretches, we turned around and headed back to the home base.
Back at the Home Base
We reached the home base at around 31 minutes out from the start time. I checked my watch and told Reanna that our pace was a slow 10:30. She was shocked and in total disbelief, and told me something must be wrong with my watch. I too felt that we had run really fast, but didn’t not say anything because if a GPS watch cannot be trusted, then what else can be ? Soon I realized that I had not stopped the watch for the 3 minutes we were stretching. So after discounting our stretch time, I calculated our average pace to be just under 9.
Meanwhile, Reanna had assembled all of us at Sidney Walton Park around the water fountain, made us do the excruciating Push-Up-Sit-ups-Push-Up drill.
The Push-Ups-Sit-Ups-Push-Ups drill consisted of doing 10 sets of push-ups, followed by 10 sets of sit-ups, followed by 10 sets of push-ups, followed by 10 sets of sit-ups and so on. You get the idea. You do it till you can’t do it no more. I was ready to give up after 2 rounds of each, but saw Reanna and another girl go at it without breaking a sweat, so my “macho” man ego took over and I did 2 more rounds, until Reanna and the other girl also stopped.
After the stretches, I got home, had a big Indian dinner and slept like a baby. The next day, my “macho”ness from the previous night punished me. I was so sore from the exercises at the home base, that I could not get out of bed for almost 5 minutes !
Still, isn’t is just “Pain is fear leaving the body.” ?
